Once upon a time — exactly one hundred and fifty years ago, to be precise — Japan presented itself for the first time as one nation during Vienna’s World Exhibition, thus spreading the interest of Japonism in Europe. This event was also an important anchor for the beginning of cultural and economic exchanges between Japan and Austria. “Once Upon Now 1873-2023” (OUN) is a performative video and sound installation based on this 150th anniversary.
For this occasion, the installation “OUN” brings forward a contemporary position, functioning as a platform for intercultural exchange. As a pavilion of togetherness placed in Tokyo, the installation plays with different shades between cultures while operating on the “what ifs” to blur the dualism between the West and East in a globalized age.
Visitors are invited to a journey through time, an otherworldly narrative of the Austrian and Japanese relation – lost in translation between history and fiction. The installation shapes familiar and strange images drawing from collective memories in a transcendental spatiality. It engages with technology not as a means of soft-power and domination but as an experimental and speculative tool, an alive and ever-evolving matter, reshaping traditions and rituals.
The exhibition consists of a multichannel video and sound installation inspired by preexisting artistic and spiritual practices. The materiality of the installation operates on an interconnection of time, nationality, technology, and emotions. It creates a floating atmosphere in which speculative rituals are performed. The repetitive practices expand a narrative through the Japanese traditional arts as Nō, Butō, and Chadō, upon fictional scenarios where borders become blurry lines in a land of dreams. They can tell an individual story or interconnect with others as a canon. They render a form of togetherness that one can float through while creating their own realm of ritual. Moving through the installation space, it is upon the visitor to imagine a story beyond borders and binaries of past and present, East and West, tradition and invention.

昔々—正確にいえばちょうど150年前、ウィーン万国博覧会に日本館が初めてひとつの国として登場し、ヨーロッパにジャポニズムの関心を広めました。この万博をきっかけに、日本とオーストリアの文化·経済交流が始まりました。” Once Upon Now 1873-2023 (OUN)”は、この150周年を記念するパフォーマティブなビデオとサウンドのインスタレーションです。
この機会に、インスタレーションOUNは、異文化交流のプラットフォームとして機能する、現代的な立場を提示します。このインスタレーションは、東京に設置された共生のパビリオンとして、グローバル化の進んだ時代における西洋と東洋の二元論を曖昧にするために、「もしも」を操作しながら、文化の間のさまざまな陰影で遊びます。
来場者は、時間の旅へ、オーストリアと日本の関係についての異世界の物語へと誘われ、歴史とフィクションの間に迷い込むでしょう。インスタレーションは、超越的な空間性の中で集合的な記憶から引き出された、馴染みのある、奇妙なイメージを形成します。テクノロジーは、ソフトパワーや支配の手段としてではなく、実験的で思索的なツールとして、伝統や儀式を再構築する、生きていて進化し続ける物質として扱われるのです。
本展は、既存の芸術的·精神的実践から着想を得た、マルチチャンネルのビデオとサウンドのインスタレーションで構成されています。インスタレーションの物質性が、時間、国籍、テクノロジー、感情の相互関係に作用します。このインスタレーションは、思索的な儀式が行われるような、浮遊した雰囲気を作り出します。繰り返しの実践が、能、舞踏、茶道といった日本の伝統芸能を通じ、夢の国で国境が曖昧になっていくような架空のシナリオを発展させていきます。個々のストーリーを語ることも、カノンとして他のストーリーと相互につなげていくこともできます。儀式という独自の領域を作りつつ浮遊するような、一体感を表現しています。インスタレーション空間を移動しながら、過去と現在、東洋と西洋、伝統と発明など、国境や二項対立を超えた物語を想像してみてください。
